struction of a town centre in Reykjavík’s neigh-
bourhood municipality of Kópavogur. Those pro-
posals are discussed in this article.

Of the many dynamic lcelandic architectural
offices, the firm Hugsmíð has been active both in
lceland and abroad. The firm is run by Guðjón
Bjarnason, architect and Gulleik Lövskar, interior
designer. Some samples of their recent work are
shown.

Constructions Lab is an lcelandic company spe-
cializing in eco-friendly architecture and communi-
ty planning. This article focuses on various com-

ner Trausti Valsson discusses the book Saga
Reykjavíkur, the History of Reykjavík, with special
emphasis on building development. He gives a
brief description of the coverage of this topic, its

For a number of years the Blue Lagoon has
been visited by most tourists to lceland who go
there to bathe. It was created by residue from a
geo-thermal plant near by and is reputed to have
considerable healing properties. The first part of a
new spa/hotel/conference centre has now been
completed.

In this article, architect Egill Guðmundsson dis-
cusses the opportunities open to lcelandic archi-
tects abroad. In his opinion, the turn of the centu-
ry should be used as a springboard to promote
lcelandic innovation outside of lceland. Three pro-
jects carried out by lcelanders abroad are detailed
as examples.

The Community College at Selfoss is located
about one hour’s drive east of Reykjavík. It was
built in 1968 and caters for 600 students. The
building was designed according to a compre-
hensive educational/psychological concept. A
“greenhouse for humans” in a greenhouse region
with abundant thermal water supply.

A recent, closed housing competition in
Greenland, promoted by Gronlandsbanken was
won by the Danish architects Schmidt, Hammer
and Lassen. Two entries were invited from all the
Scandinavian countries. The objective of the com-
petition was to encourage discussion about good
housing and housing types in Greenland, empha-
sising a short construction period and lower build-
ing and running costs.

TURN OF THE CENTURY:
This brief article focuses on the first triennial
architectural convention which is to be held in
Oslo in the autumn of 2000. The theme of the con-
vention will be the status of urban areas in the
Nordic countries and the factors which may affect
them in the coming century. ■
