Cap 5—17 mm broad, convex-flat with obtuse umbo, purplish liverbrown—dull date brown (c 1-—h 1), pellucidly striate, the margin of the cap with the floccose remains of the white veil. Stipe up to 7 cm high, colour of the cap, paler above, darker below, partly covered with a white fibrillose velum, as a rule forming a ring. Gills broadly adnate, ochraceous—fulvous (g 2—g3). In birch copses. Cap 1 /i—3 cm broad, at first flatly convex, then plane or somewhat depressed with a sharp edge, hygrophanous, when moist yellowish brown, pellucidly striate, when dry clay-brownish; the margin in young specimens has a minute, white, fibril- lose veil. Stipe 3—5 cm high, 2—3 mm thick, hollow, coloured like the cap, finely fibrillose-striate, white-woolly below. Gills adnate to broadly adnate, ventricose, tawny, edge white and fimbrillate. Smell none. Basidia 4-spored. Cystidia at edge of gills cylindrical with swollen apex, c. 37 X 7 H. Spores smooth, ovoid, 6—8 X 4—5 JU. 89. *T. crobula Fries, Epicr., p. 299. J. E. Lange, Fl. Agar. Cap c. 1 cm broad, convex, then plane, hygrophanous and somewhat viscid, when moist brown, edge slightly striate, with fugacious, white flocci, soon smooth, when dry whitish-yellow with shining centre. Stipe above pale brown, darker brown below, covered with a floccose brownish coating. Gills greyish-brown, broadly adnate, somewhat distant. Spores ovate 7—8 X 4—5 JU. Plate, fig. 59.
