Not All Lesbians Need Rights
Serbia’s last Prime Minister was the lesbian
Ana Brnabić, the first openly queer person
to act as head of government in the Balkan
Region, having been in office from 2017 until
2024, which is also the longest time that one
person has held the office. Instead of being
seen as a positive representation for Serbia’s
LGBTQ+ community, she however sparked
rage and disappointment among queer
people, as she declared that queer rights
would not be on her agenda. This raises
questions about the illusion of progress, as
the appointment could be seen as a form of
pinkwashing of the government, considering
that indeed no effort was made to improve
queer rights during Brnabić’s time in office,
in stark contrast to Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir’s
accomplishments as Iceland’s Prime Minister
(2009-2013).
