genes of the XX-chromosomal pattern it is assumed that the
cortex produces the morphogenetic substance which transforms
the cortex into the ovary and arrests the development of the
medulla. In the male individual the genes of the XY-chromo-
somal pattern will further the formation of testicular tissue
and inhibit the development of the cortex.
The formation and development of the remaining internal
and external genitalia are controlled hormonally from the
gonadal anlage, these primordia being potentially capable of
male or female development. In the female the so-called Miille-
rian duct is developed, which first differentiates into the
uterine tubes on either side and secondly fuses more distally
