103 Að MÁLA MEð MÆNUNNI Ú T d R Á T T U R Að mála með mænunni Kenningar Maurice Merleau-Pontys um skynjun og líkamnaða vitund má nota til að greina betur ýmsar umbreytingar í myndlist tuttugustu aldar. Í greininni er fjallað um list Willem de Kooning og hugmyndir hans um hliðstæður málverks og holds en hún tekur líka til upphafs minimalismans við upphaf sjöunda áratugarins og svokall- aðrar post-painterly myndlistar. Höfundur leiðir að því rök að þessar nálganir hafi ekki, eins og oft er talið, viðhaldið hughyggjunni sem fyrstu abstraktlistamennirnir byggðu á, heldur leitast við að brúa bilið milli listaverksins og skynjunar áhorfand- ans, hliðstætt því hvernig Merleau-Ponty lýsir sambandi skynvitundarinnar og ver- aldarinnar. Þegar þessari greiningu er líka beitt á samband listamanns og listaverks opnast leið að nýjum skilningi á listrænni sköpun. A B S T R A C T Spinal sweep Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of perception and the embodied subject can be used to further our understanding of key developments in twentieth century art. The paper focuses on the work of Willem de Kooning and the parallel he drew between painting and flesh, but also takes in the advent of minimalism in the 1960s and the development of post-painterly art. The author argues that these later approaches, far from perpetuating the idealism of early abstract art, in fact seek to shrink the perceptual distance between viewer and artwork, much as Merlau-Ponty explains the relationship of the subject and its world. When also applied to the relationship of the artist and his work, this analysis can open up a understanding artistic practice.
