The lcelandic Canadian Club of British Columbia
by Geraldine McDonald
The Icelandic Canadian Club of
B.C. has had a very active year in
1990/91 and we are looking for-
ward to an exciting 1991/92.
The activities of the club are
centred at Iceland House in New
Westminster, B.C. which was pur-
chased by the club in 1990, in re-
sponse to the growing needs of the
membership. ICC of BC has over
500 members and offers a variety of
cultural and social activities for all
ages.
Throughout the year, social
events including a Kaffihús and
card games were held at the House.
In August, there was a large recep-
tion for an Icelandic tour group. It was
an opportunity to renew old acquaint-
ances and to make new ones. It was also
an opportunity to enjoy a few songs as
everyone sang along to the music of one
of the tour members who brought along
his accordian. Also during the summer,
there was a reception for Jón H. Bergs,
Honourary Consul-General for Canada
in Iceland.
Some activities have taken place at
locations otherthan Iceland House. Tra-
ditionally each summer, a picnic with
our friends from Washington State is
held at the Peace Arch Park on the
Canada-United States border. Thisyear
close to 200 people attended in the beau-
tiful sunshine. Coffee and cake were
served by Stafholt (Blaine, Wa.) and
friends while soccer, volleyball and races
were held for the younger set. Other
lceland
annual events included a Christmas
party, Þorrablót and an Icelandic Inde-
pendence Day celebration.
ICC ofBC hosted the 1991INL Con-
vention held in New Westminster. It
took the efforts of many members to
organize the event.
On September 25, 1991, the annual
general meeting was held, at which the
executive presented its reports for the
1990/91 year. Also at this meeting the
1991/92 executive was elected and 12
deserving students of Icelandic heritage
were awarded scholarships.
On October 6th, the club was repre-
sented at the Leif Eiríksson Fest which
was sponsored by the Scandinavian Cul-
tural Society in celebration of the
millenium of the discovery of North
America by Leifur Eiríksson.

the past year. Skiing, baseball, bowling
and rollerskating were some of the ac-
tivities organized. The summer brought
a successful weekend camping trip to
Cultus Lake. 1991/92 promises to see
expanded activities for the group. We
want to try to appeal to the interests of
our younger generation, those who will
hopefully carry forth their heritage.
Icelandic classes began on October
19th at Iceland House. Classes are held
for beginners, intermediate and ad-
vanced groups and we are very fortu-
nate to have teachers from Iceland
present the courses.
Iceland House is not only a cen-
tre for club activities, it is also a
resource centre for individual in-
terests. The House will contain the
Sólskin Library which has over
3500 volumes in English and Ice-
landic. The Icelandic Archives of
British Columbia are also housed
there. They include original docu-
ments and artifacts of iCelanders
and their descendants who settled
in B.C. and Point Roberts, Wash-
ington. These historic materials are
available for review,and copies of
documents and photographs can
be made.
Social events are now being
planned for this year. Coming up
on November 23rd there will be a
Kaffihús and slide show. Afternoon card
games are planned for seniors and
evening card games for everyone. A choir
will be organized in the near future.
If you are not a member of the ICC of
BC and are interested in joining, you
may contact our membership director,
Naomi Dyer at 942-9594. Membership
includes a quality monthly newsletter
on the club’s activities and articles of
interest. If you are already a member but
have not participated recently, remem-
ber that the success of any club is not
just the numbers of members, but the
interaction of those members.
