Hecla Island Heritage was offi-
cially incorporated in August of
1988, and since that time has been
working in co-operation with the
Dept. of Natural Resources and the
Provincial Parks Association on the
restoration of Hecla’s Icelandic
Heritage Village.
Restoration of the “Yellow frame
house” has now been completed.
Basic furnishings and artifacts from
the 20’s to the 40’s have been col-
lected and the house should be open
for viewing for the next summer
tourist season.
Construction of the community
hall is in progress. It will stand on a
full basement, heating, wash rooms
and cloak rooms will be installed as
well as ramps to ac-
commodate wheel
chair accessibility.
The original size
of 24 by 60 will be
changed to 30 feet
wide and 72 feet
long. All speci-
fications have been
put into place for
the new hall to be
replicated in ap-
pearance to the
original hall, inside
and out. The
school, Tomasson
boarding house and
log house are also
in the process of
being restored.

In April we became an affiliate of
the Icelandic National League.
A grant was received from the
office of the Minis-
ter of State Multi-
culturalism and Citi-
zenship to assist in
the funding of a re-
search project by his-
torian and re-
searcher, Nelson
Gerrard, on “Hecla
Island Pioneers and
Place Names” which
is nearing comple-
tion. Accompanying
the approval of the
grant was a letter
with the following
quote: “The preser-
vation of the unique
culture established
by the Icelandic pio-
neers at Hecla Island
without a doubt deserves attention.
These pioneers worked long and
hard to carve their homes and their
society out of the harsh environ-
Hecla Reunion
Days. The children
are waiting for the
signal to begin the
race.

house is in the

ment they en-

Lake Winnipeg.
Their work and
their strength
needs to be documented asitcan be
presented to today’s society as a
rolemodel towards which to strive. ”
We invite all former residents,
Itis ourhope
that children
will again
come together
in Hecla
Village and
enjoy the
safe haven of
the island’s
beautyand
tranquility
as in days
gone by.
