The Sólskin Society of
Vancouver continues to be
an active organization, serv-
ing the Icelandic commu-
nity in and around the Van-
couver area. Over the years,
members have ranged in age
from 9-year-old Sara
Penway to 96-year-old
Salome Johnson. The mem-
bership fee still remains 50e
per year, as stipulated in the
original constitution of 1917.
Sólskin became a registered
society in 1969 when it was
incorporated
under the Soci-
ety Act of Brit-
ish Columbia.

in Icelandic costume, with her spin-
ning wheel; a Harvest Country
Hoedown in September, with Farmer
Brown (Sylvia Wetten), bulbous nose
all aglow, providing fun and entertain-
ment; an October Anniversary Tea,
sponsored by the Höfn Board, with the
Sólskin ladies, some in Icelandic cos-
tumes, serving refreshments; a Hawai-
ian theme party with leis, planned for
November; and the Annual Christmas
party in December, complete with gifts
for each resident. At these theme par-
ties coffee, cake and ice cream are
served and a sing-a-long and dancing is
enjoyed by all, with music supplied by
Gwen Dowding, Sylvia Isfeld and Cecil
Sveinson.
In addition to these events, Sólskin
holds two bazaars each year to raise
funds. This year corsages and
boutonnieres, made by Thordis Wilson
and Olga Holm, were presented to each
Höfn resident on their birthday. One of
our members, Anna Penway, lends a
special helping hand to the residents
by mending clothes and cheering them
up.
This year, Sólskin members voted to
join the Icelandic National League as
an affiliate member. In April, Sólskin
hosted a luncheon at Iceland House
for the Icelandic National League Con-
vention delegates. In May, Sólskin
hosted a luncheon sponsored by the
Höfn Board and
another one by
the Volunteer
Association. Our
annual June pic-
nic was held at
Carrie and Luke

oceansidehome,
with Runa

his wife.
Sólskin Ca-
sino will be held
for three nights
in late October,
with the pro-
ceeds going to-
wards fumishings for Höfn and for the
Sólskin Library at Iceland House.
In 1992 Sólskin will reach another
milestone in its long career as an
organization serving the Icelandic
community. The Sólskin ladies are
now compiling memoirs for their 75th
Anniversary in November of 1992. We
are particularly interested in gathering
information on the Charter members.
To date, we have compiled infor-
mation on some ofthe 1917 organizers
