pared and promoted by the INL. She
also presented a calendar to Ambassa-
dor Tómas Tómasson. He was over-
whelmed to see that on the front cover
was a picture of his grandmother. He
immediately asked Evelyn for more cop-
ies for other family members.
The main part of the conference ad-
dressed the theme “Þjóðræknismál”, or
heritage and cultural interaction, and
ways of promoting this concept. The

computerized directory. The directory is
to be a complete compilation of all the
Icelandic Canadians and Icelandic
Americans who are members of the INL,
subscribers to Lögberg-Heimskringla,
and all those who have shown interest in
their Icelandic roots by contacting the
office of the Icelandic National League.
The National League of Iceland is also
in the process of preparing a similar
directory of people of Icelandic descent
throughout the world.
There was considerable discussion
on the value of the directories and their
potential for use. There was mutual agree-
ment on its value for cultural ties, infor-
mational ties and even issues such as
wedding anniversary with family and
friends on October 5, 1991. The event
was hosted by their daughter and son-
in-law, Burma and Doug Hambly of

medical research as was conducted
within the Icelandic community of Mani-
toba recently. The National League of
Iceland is also eager to acquire a copy of
the INL’s North American directory.
In heraddress to the gathering,
the President reminded us all to
tell the children that it does not
matter whether or not they speak
Icelandic, it is the memories of
where they have come from that
count.
There were presentations from sev-
eral of the delegates from the National
League of Iceland and the Icelandic
National League of North America and
one from the President of the Icelandic
Association of Washington, D.C..
Delegates were also presented with an
excellent orientation on modem Ice-
land, in terms of its economic trade and
commerce.
The Director of the Export Council of
Iceland showed conference attendees a
series ofgraphs describingthe declining
fish catches, and therefore the necessity
of increasing the value-added compo-
nent of the export produce. He also gave
a listing of possible service industries
that are being contemplated. As he
pointed out, Iceland has the cleanest air,
the cleanest water, and one of the high-
est standards of living, literacy rates and
life expectancies. Further to that, Ice-
land boasts world masters in chess and
bridge, as well as world-recognized
beauty queens. Surely there is a way of
marketing this health, beauty and intel-
ligence to the rest of the world through
a health spa, for instance. It was pointed
out that 10% of the country’s economy
is related to tourism. The Export council
felt this was a place where there was
potential for future development and
expansion. To this end, the Council

asked for co-operation from the Icelan-
dic community of North America to
help promote Iceland. The group agreed
together that this was a positive goal for
all of us to work at together.
The conference wound up with a
discussion on networking and commu-
nication between the partners in Ice-
land, the United Statesand Canada. The
National League of Iceland and the Ice-
landic National League of North
America discussed several issues that
are already in place and brainstormed
on ideas for further networking between
Iceland and North America.
The conference concluded with an
invitation from the Icelandic National
League of North America encouraging
more of the U.S. Icelandic associations
to join the league and attend the annual
convention scheduled for May, 1992 at
Hecla Island, Manitoba. On the other
hand, the National League of Iceland is
tentatively planninga conference in 1992
with Icelandic associations throughout
Europe and then a convention of I celan-
dic associations world-wide in Iceland,
in 1993. With the excellent rapport that
occured in Washington in 1991, this
world-wide conference promises to be a
landmark event, one where our Icelan-
dic communities in North America will
certainly be represented.
