Leifur Eiríksson Conference -1991
Robert Ásgeirsson represented the Ice-
landic Canadian Club of British Colum-
bia. These two British Columbia repre-
sentatives were to be especially
commended for their attendance; they
had travelled further than anyone, in-
cluding the delegation from Iceland.
The conference was chaired by Teitur
Lárusson, Vice-President of the National
League of Iceland, and his first official
duty was to introduce her Excellency,
Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, President of Ice-
land. She needed no introduction, how-
ever, and spent several minutes circling
the room, greeting everyone personally,
spending a moment with members of
the Canadian group whom she had met
on previous occasions.
The president remarked several times
on the pleasant memories she had of her
visit to Canada in 1989. She also sent a
special greeting to the chil dren of Canada
whom she had met in 1989. In her ad-
dress to the gathering, she reminded us
all to tell the children that it does not
matter whether or not they speak Ice-
landic, it is the memories of where they
have come from that count. She urged
all of us not to lose those memories, and
she quoted a paraphrased Icelandic say-
ing: “A friend whom you trust, go often
to his house. You need a path to guide
you, therefore do not let the grass grow
tall.”

This conference
was held in Washing-
ton, D.C., on October,
8th, 1991, under the
direction of the Na-
tional League of Ice-
land. The conference
was an ancillary event
to the arrival of the
three replica Viking
ships, Gaia, Oseberg
and Saga Siglar. The
ships arrived in Washington the follow-
ing day, 9th of October, Leifur Eiríksson
Day.
A delegation of eight Canadians were
in attendance at the events in Washing-
ton. Gordon Thorvaldson was there on
behalf of Lögberg-Heimskringla, not
only in his capacity as a member of the
board of directors, but also as the official
cameraman for the tour; Evelyn
Thorvaldson, President of the Icelandic
National League of North America; Elva
President Vigdís greets conference attendants.
