(UMISS) University of Manitoba lcelandic Students Society
UMISS, or the University
of Manitoba Icelandic
Students Society, was founded
in 1989. Since then, we have
seen our membership grow
from the first five founding
members to forty-five mem-
bers strong in 1991.
The objective in founding
UMISS was to promote the
Icelandic Culture and herit-
age here in Canada. And al-
though we have featured cul-
tural events we have found
that our best attendance is still
at our more “social” functions.
One aim of the present UMISS
executive is to find a way of
combining the two without
losing the benefits of either.
Members of the UMISS executive
Since our beginning in 1989,
we have organized events such
as Viking Days, a “Glíma”, or
wrestling demonstration, a Viking
Day Social, a Kaffihús, a beer bash,
Grapes Night at Grapes Pier 7
and most recently, a mix and
mingle Kaffi and Vínarterta get to-
gether.
Another aspect of UMISS is
our monthly newsletter, Nemenda-
blaðið, which is sent to all our mem-
bers and provides a valuable source
of communication among UMISS
members. Any UMISS member
can contribute. In fact, the execu-
tive encourages contributions or
else we have to write the entire
newsletter ourselves!
At the moment, UMISS has
many plans for the 1991-92 aca-
demicyear. OnThursday, November
15, we are holding a social af-
ternoon at the U of M campus.
Ethnic food along with vari-
ous refreshments will be avail-
able. There will be a musical
mix of both old and new, hope-
fully something for everyone.
UMISS is also presently
looking for artists of Icelandic
heritage who would be inter-
ested in displaying their art in
an exhibition at an upcoming
Kaffihús. Musicians, poets and
speakers are also welcome. For
more information, contact
Chelsea or Jolene (numbers
found below).
Fundraising is something
Umiss is working diligently on
this year. At the moment we
are selling UMISS sweatshirts fea-
turing the coat of arms of Iceland
and Entertainment ’92 books. If you
are interested in either, contact Greg
(number also found below).
Last but not least, it’s time to
introduce the UMISS executive for
the 1991-92 academic year.
