Why bother, just let it happen!” I, on the other hand, love planning the trip months in advance. Poring over travel books, deciding what we’ll do, where we’ll go, how we’ll get there. Luckily, these two schools of thought balance well together. I do the planning and the unexpected is left to Kris. Deanna Swaney provides a de- tailed account of, it seems, every mile of Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which will definitely appeal to the travel enthusiast. Ifyouarea Saga enthusiastyou’ll appreciate the mention of such places as the farm of Aðalból in the east of Iceland, the home of Hrafnkell Hallfreðarson Freysgoði, the priest of Freyr and hero of the popular Hrafnkels Saga. The au- thor describes the area, briefly sum- marizes the Saga and then informs the traveller ,on practical matters like how to get there and where to stay. lí/like Goodman, last oflegendary ice hockey team by Lourdes Fernandez Magnus “Mike” Goodman, the last surviving member of the Canadian ice hockey team that won the 1920 Olympics, died recently in Miami at the age of 93. He suffered heart failure, his family said. Until then, “he never had any bad health. He had a lot of stitches from playing hockey,” said his son John. Mr. Goodman’s accomplishments as part of the 10-man Olympics team and as a Canadian speed-skating champion earned him a place last year in the Calgary, Alberta, Olympic Hall of Fame. He also had been inducted into the Manitoba Hall of Fame. Mr. Goodman joined the American Hockey League after the Olympics. He was a player in Duluth, Minn., and Wichita, Kan., and a manager and coach with the Kansas City Playmores. “I was starting to get over the hill by then, so when something new came up, I decided to take it,” he once said. The something new was a 1939 offer to coach in South Florida’s newest ice hockey league, the Coral Gables Seminoles. The team, mostly Canadian players, played in the Coliseum in Coral Gables and competed against teams from Havana, Miami and Miami Beach. But it was too expensive to bring the players from Canada, and the Coli- seum was no place to play— Florida’s humidity, combined with the ice and high ceilings in the Coliseum, created clouds of fog inside the building. The league folded a year later. Mr. Goodman then worked at the Coral Gables Laundryuntil 1981, when he retired at the age of 82. But he kept giving skating lessons throughout his 80s. “He continued skating until a year ago,” his son said. “Hé could still move, even at that age, faster than I could.” In addition to his son, Mr. Goodman is survived by his daughter, Marsha Bradley, of Rockport, Texas; sister Gudrun Johnston and brother Jim Goodman, both of Winnipeg; five grandchildren and four great-grand- children. Courtesy oí The Herald Are you interested in “other worldly” adventures? In west cen- tral Iceland, Deanna directs you to Ólafsvík and Snæfellsjökull and captures that feeling. The glacier apparently has a sort of New Age following because it is considered one of the world’s great “power cen- tres”. There is power, certainly, but it is mostly in the form of wind and rain. However, she explains in de- tail the various approaches to the glacier, whether you are hiking or driving. This pocket book begins each sec- tion with facts about the country including history, economy, holi- days and festivals and many more. Each country is then broken down into divisions. Iceland is divided into 11 divisions including a sepa- rate section on Reykjavík, The Reykjanes Peninsula and central Iceland. Informational headings like, Things to see, Getting there and away, Places to stay and eat, and Walks and Tours are included for almost every town or area. The author’s personal and caring attention to detail produces a well written, easy to follow and informa- tive travel book. This thoroughness is repeated in the chapters on Green- land and the Faroe Islands. These three countries can be toured easily and with confidence with this travel survival kit in hand. □ Obituary Solmundson, Le On August 12,1991, Leo passed awav neacefullv in Marvatc Flnriria ifur Jónas “Leo” Kjartan “Kardy” of Gimli. í tc curvivPíl hv Hflno'hí'Pr Born to Jóhann Pjetur LtVv lp auIVIYvU Ujr Leanne and her husband James öuimunuson dnu und uuurun Jónasdóttir in Gimli, Manítoba on the sixth of April, 1904, Leo was nrerierr'aseri hv h is hplnveri wí Rpttxf Manuyor bipnaa, two sons. inGOaore “Ted” and his wife Bonnie of Ari- zona and David and his wife Ginnie piyu.vvvaðvU: uy x Ua lAiíyyvU W UC OyUy (Elsabet Sveinsson), infant son PhiUip Jóhann, five sisters: Ingibjörg “Imba” Heivasnn Guðnín “Gunna” Ui 1 LÁdo, gt <XJlUUclUgnLLFo, ivUaCUiUv : and Suzanne, grandsons Brian, Erik, Jeffrey, and Kurt.
