Lutheran Women's League —
Bandalag Lúterskra Kvenna
INGIBJÖRG. J...OLAFSSON
After a few years someone will proably ask, “What was this
Lutheran Women’s League? When was it organized? By whom?
For what purpose? How long was it active? What did it ac-
complish?”
“Bandalag Lúterskra Kvenna’” has a musical sound to my
ears, a name its members loved and used until the time came
when it was changed to English, then it became The Lutheran
Women’s League — a name whioh now has grown equally dear
to us.
The answer to the first question is simple. The League con-
sisted of the Ladies Aids of the Icelandic Evangelical Lutheran
Synod in America, and some individual members belonging to the
said Synod. It was organized at a meeting held in connection with
a Synodical Convention held in Selkirk, Manitoba, in June 1935.
Prior to that, the topic had been discussed at meetings of the
Ladies Aid of the First Lutheran Church in Winnipeg, but no
decision had been reached. Later Mrs. B. S. Benson of Selkirk,
Man. invited the members of the First Lutheran Ladies Aid and
members of the Selkirk Lutheran Church Ladies Aid to a coffee
party in her home. There it was decided to send letters to the
different Ladies Aids of the Synod inviting them to send dele-
gates to a meeting to be held to the following summer in connec-
tion with the Synodical Convention. At that meeting the League
was organized and officers elected.
