The Leadership Training
Project Sunrise Camp
LILJA M. GUTTORMSSON
The sun rose on Sunrise Lutheran Camp on July 7, 1946, the
day of its dedication. Rev. Haraldur Sigmar Sr., then president of
the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North America, conducted the
ceremony assisted by Dr. Runolfur Marteinsson, Rev. Egill Fafnis,
Rev. Sigurdur Olafsson, and Rev. Skuli Sigurgeirson, in the presence
of six hundred people. This impressive and memorable event was
followed by refreshments served by various Ladies Aids within
ihe Lutheran Women’s League.
The dedication of Sunrise Camp was the culmination of an
effort being made over a number of years, the effort to realize a
dream born in the minds of leaders of the L. W. L. They dreamed
of initiating and carrying on annually a course in Leadership
Training for those Christian young people who were interested
in serving as leaders of youth in their churches. It was felt that
this project could be a purpose, a goal, for the L. W. L. to work
for, a unifying force, which would be essential for its success in
uniting the women who were active in the Ladies Aids within the
churches of Synod.
The purpose of this short article is to give a summary of the
history of this project, first in rented camps, and then in our own
camp built at Husavick, Manitoba.
In the year 1936 a new slate of officers was nominated and
elected at the Lutheran Women’s League Convention held at
Lundar: Past Pres., Mrs. Gudrun Johnson, Winnipeg; Pres., Mrs.
Ingibjörg Olafsson, Arborg; Vice-Pres., Mrs. Thjodbjorg Henrick-
son, Winnipeg; Secretary, Mrs. Holmfridur Danielson, Arborg;
Vice-Secretary, Mrs. Gudrun A. Erlindson, Arborg; Treasurer, Mrs.
Jona Sigurdson, Arborg; Vice-Treasurer, Miss Kristin Skulason,
Geysir. The idea of a project which could be undertaken by the
L. W. L. was brought up at this convention but there were no
suggestions made at that time.
