*12 Aulfœr: Hafa ma madur umbod, þa hann sie altrædur ef hann er Hestfær
og aulfær. — The following note has been provided for me by Professor
Magnús Már Lárusson:
Þetta er minnisgrein lögfræðilegs eðlis. I Jónsbók vantar ákvæði um
hámarksaldur umboðsmanna. Því verður að búa til lagareglu um það
atriði, og er þá höfð hliðsjón af Kvg. 21: “Ef maðr hefir vit sitt ok má
búi sínu ráða ok kaupum ok er hestfærr ok ölfærr, þá skal hann sjálfr fé
sínu ráða” (NGL II 238, II 90, IV 241); — og, sem eftirtektar vert er,
Grágás II 83, Ia 246, II 98, þar sem hæfismark eiganda til frjálsrar með-
ferðar á eigum er sett til áttræðisaldurs. Hinar fornu reglur Grágásar
skjóta upp kollinum við og við og má til hliðsjónar við ofannefnda minn-
isgrein benda á Alþingisdóm um umboð Þórunnar Jónsdóttur árið 1591,

One might also compare the proverb 0lvar [for Olfœr?] þarf sá aS vera,
sem lögunum á aS stýra. See Arnheiður Sigurðardóttir, Skírnir CXXXI
(1957), 134—135. — LI has a similar entry to that in SLR: 20 At auk:“Hala
ma hinn gamli madur umbod sitt sialfur / medann hann er hest fær / og aul-
fær.” Aulfœr is interpreted in the same way in both dictionaries: “Ambulare
potis [SLR: potens]” (!).
*2 Aburdur: Þa er sa aburdur fullur. — I have been unable to find this sen-
tence in any oí the surviving lawbooks.
The Bible (Vetus Translatio). There are two references to a
“Vetus Translatio” in the glossary, which is also noted in the list of
sources. The book referred to is apparently the Guðbrandsbihlía of
1584:
5 Alldurtyle: Saul blies ögnum og alldurtyla. — This corresponds with the
translation of Acts IX 1 in Guðbrandsbiblía. The 1540 translation of the
gospels adds the word enn after blies, hut is otherwise the same.
*9 Astrakadur Salur: Stratum Cœnaculum. Luc. 22 in translatione veteri. —
These words are found in the translation of Luke XXII 12 in Guðbrands-
biblía. The same words appear also in the 1540 translation, but only in the
parallel passage in Mark XIV 15, while thc passagc in Luke is translated
differently; so the reference to Luke 22 in SLR confirms that Guðbrands-
hiblía is the source of the quotations.
The second entry is not in DG 55, but this may have been an accidental
omission. It is not possible to be certain whether or not it was in the original
glossary.
