Eflir þetta fer áhugi þings og þjóð-
ar sívaxandi í símamálinu, þó að
lítið bóli raunar á því þar til 1897;
þá liggja fyrir þinginu 2 tilboð um
að leggja sæsíma frá HjalLlandi lil
íslands, yfir Færej'jar; annað er frá
2 Englendingum, Mitchel og Cooper,
og vilja þeir fá til þess 45,000 kr.
styrk úr landssjóði á ári í 25 ár; hitt
er frá Mikla norræna Ritsímafélaginu,
og fer það fram á 40,000 kr. árstil-
lag í 20 ár, en lætur þess þó jafn-
framt getið, að það muni líklega láta
sér nægja 35,000 kr. á ári, og þessa
uppliæð veitti svo þingið. Þetta er í
fyrsta skifti, sem símamálið kemst
inn í fjárlögin, og þetta sama árstil-
lag hefir vcrið samþykt á hverju
þingi síðan.
Árið eftir sendi Mikla norræna ame-
rískan verkfræðing, Hanson að nafni,
hingað upp til rannsókna, og ferðað-
ist hann hér nm í 2 ár í þeim er-
indagerðum. Hann kemur fyrstur upp
með það, að leggja sæsímann upp lil
Austurlandsins, en ekki til Reykja-
víkur, og að félagið greiði aftur á
móti íslandi fé það, sem sparaðist
við þetta, lil að byggja fyrir landlínu
lil Reykjavíkur, og var upphæð þessi
áætluð 300,000 kr.
Aðalástæðan til þess að símalagn-
ingunni var ekki komið í framkvæmd
á næstu árum, var sú, að félögin,
sem sóttu um leyfi þetta, gátu ekki
fengið nægilegan fjárstyrk frá öðrum
ríkjum, eins og þau munu hafa gert
sér vonir um.
Eftir þetta er málinu að vísu hreyft
á hverju þingi, en lítið í því gert, er

increases steadily, although it is not
very evident until in the year 1897.
That year the Parliament received
two offers to lay a submarine cable
from the Shelland Islands, via Faroe
Islands to Iceland; one of these was
from two Englishmen, Mitchel and
Cooper, wlio claimed an annual suh-
vention of 45,000 kroner fronr the
Icelandic Government for the next 25
years; the other was from the Great
Northern Telegraph Company Ltd. of
Copenhagen, which claimed an annu-
al subvention of 40,000 kroner from
the Government for the next 20
years, hut liinted at the same time
that it might content itseif with
35,000 kroner annually, which amount
was granted by the Parliament. This
was the first time that the lelegraph
question was put on the budget and
since that year the same amount has
ahvays been voted by the Parliament.
In the following year tlie G. N. T.
Co. seni hitlier an American engineer,
Mr. Hanson, to examine the line
route. He remained here 2 years for
that purpose. Mr. Hanson was the
first one to propose thal the cable he
landed on the east coast and not al
Reykjavík and, furthermore, that the
Company pay the amount thus saved
to lceland for erecting an overland
line to Reykjavík. This amount was
estimated at 300,000 kroner.
The principal reason why the erec-
tion was not executed the follow'ing
years wras that the companies thal
had applied for the license could not
ohtain the subvention whicli they
liad expected from otlier states.
