rates. No statistically significant excess was found in over
all cancer incidence nor in the incidence of cancer at any
particular site.
A special survey of smoking habits showed that
cigarette smoking is not as common among marine
engineers and machinists as among the general male
population in Reykjavík. These results support the
suggestion that the increased mortality of lung cancer in
the study group has a causal relationship to occupational
exposure, particularly the asbestos exposure.
