a project involving Method- and Time Study oí power line construction carried out by the State Power Works in Iceland, the author describes a bonus system installed as a result o£ these studies which lead to a 25—28% reduction in working time with a 23 % bonus on the hourly wage íor workers employed in this activity. In this case numerous diííiculties were encountered, but, generally speaking, imder normal conditions as will be íound in indoor work where working conditions are more or less the some throughout the year, one may count on 20—30% increase in output through systematic Method- and Time Study. Reviewing brieíly the history of Rationalization and Work Study in Norway, the author goes on to explain the importance oí carrying out Work Study within the íramework oí a general agreement between labour and employers. Such an agreement has been in effect in Norway since 1947, and has greatly facilitated the application of Work Study in Nor- wegian industry. He goes on to dis- cuss some of the problems involved in initiating this activity the attitude of management, lccbour and foremen and concludes with discussing some of the qualifications that a Work Study man will have to possess in order to be able to do an effective job. New Freezing Technique pp. 63—64 A brief description of a new freezing method being tried out in the U.S.A. Packaged food, stored in special in- sulated aluminium containers, are sprayed with liquid nitrogen which boils off at -f- 196°C and therefore results in ultra fast freezing. The very deep frozen foods can be stored for many weeks, in these containers, out- side in warm weather without thaw- ing and thus transported as ordinary freight directly to the consumers location. Also a brief description of new small automatic equipment for cooling and freezing precooked foods in 5 minutes by means of spraying and immerging in liquid nitrogen. Payment by results p. 64 A short review of the book „Pay- ment by Results". pp. 204, published in 1960 (fifth impression) by the Inter- national Labour Organization in Geneva. The book is available in the IMSÍ Technical Library. Directives for the execution of Time Studies pp. 65, 66 and 72 This is a translation of an agree- ment between the Norwegian Federa- tion of Emploýers and the Norwegian Federation of Labour prescribing procedures for Time Studies in Nor- way. The original agreement made in 1947, was revised in 1955. Characteristics and Prices of the Chief Plastic Materials p. 67 Automobile Inspection Service pp. 68—69 Last July an Automobile Ispection Service Station opened in Reykjavík; The Station is equipped with instru- ments to check and control all the various factors at plaý in the ópera- tion of an automobile such as the mo- tor, the electrical system, stearing, breaks, etc. In all 73 factors are che- cked in a rutine inspection. With its modern equipment and speciallý trained technicians it is expected that the station will make an important contribution to increased traffic safety through its service to automobile own- ers and also help prospective second- hand car buyers in getting their mon- ey's worth.
