field in Iceland. Mr. De Groot came
here under the auspices of the
European Productivity Agency, but
several Icelandic associations and
institutions were jointly responsible
for.this project. Mr. De Groot's findings
will be reverted to when his report is
on hand.
The National Economic Merits of the
Consumer Goods Industry p. 71

This is a review of a report com-
piled by a committee established in
1955 to investigate the above. The
study involved mainly industries
utilizing imported materials. It was
forrnd that in 1957 13,8% of the nation
earned their livelihood in this sector
whereas in 1950 the corresponding
percentage was 14,8. Thus, apparantly
these industries have not drawn
labour from others, for inst. the fishing
industry. The comparison was made
between value added per person
employed and capital requirements in
different industries on one hand and
fishing on the other. This comparison
revealed that production of fishing
gear, cardboard-containers, paint,
fertilizer, Portland-cement and boat
building fully compared with fishing
in the above respect.
Special consideration was given
these industries from the point of view
of Iceland entering a marketing union.
It was concluded that in such a case
the number of industries requiring
excessive protection was so small that
it constituted no appreciable barrier
with respect to eventual participation.
The foreign curréncy savings' of tlre
industries under consideration, were
also studied.

utensil he has invented, which re-
lieves the housewife of the worry of
her foods boiling over during cooking.
A perforated ring is fitted into upper
part of the pot, the brim of which
widens in a curved fashion to receive
all overflowing and directs it back into
