1. Is the Nordic race on the decline and for what
reasons?
2. By what means can this process be checked?
ad 1. Responding to your inquiry »Is the Nordic
race on the decline?« and »For what reasons«, I can
only say that it is agreed that it is on the decline in
the United States. This is not to assert that the total
numbers are diminishing from generation to genera-
tion, altho the increase is no doubt far less than it
was two generations ago. The reason for the relative
decline is the enormous immigration of the Mediter-
ranean peoples and Jews from the interior of Europe
into the United States; in one year almost equal to
the number of children born in the United States.
There is, no doubt, also a decline in the size of fa-
milies, which is probably in large part due to a
growth of luxury and love of ease and dislike of a
handicap to personal freedom which results from a
large family. This reduction in the size of family is,
however, a phenomenon that is not confined to the
United States but is found also in other civilized
countries. It seems to be part of the same pheno-
menon as brought Rome to an end and perhaps other
highly organized and financially prosperous com-
munities.
ad 2. As to the inquiry how this process can be
checked, I should say that in the United States it
could be checked by restricting immigration to the
Nordic race. Also it can be checked if the Nordic
race migrates into new countries like North America
and Argentina so that there will be room for its
proper expansion. It is by immigration that Great
Britain has become the British empire. It will help
to stop the process if cres work for increased feeling
of racial responsibility — a matter which applied
eugenics inculcates.
Die nordische Rasse ist in Deutschland insofern im
Riickgang, als ihr Prozentanteil an der Bevolkerung
geringer wird. Absolut betrachtet diirfte allerdings die
Zahl der Menschen von rein nordischem Typus im
heutigen Deutschland nicht geringer sein als vor etwa
2000 Jahren.
Die Ursachen des relativen Riickganges sind sehr
mannigfacher Art, wahrscheinlich sind die verschiede-
nen Ursachen zu den verschiedenen Zeiten sehr un-
gleich wichtig gewesen. Heute wirkt wohl im wesent-
lichen die Fruchtbarkeitsauslese, besonders verhång-
nisvoll. Man kann wohl auch flir Deutschland sagen,
dass heute gerade die vorausschauenden, zielbewuss-
ten, nuchtern denkenden und uberdurchschnittlich
intelligenten Menschen sich weniger stark fortpflanzen
als der Volksdurchschnitt. Dieser verhångnisvolle
Auslesevorgang spielt sich ja heute in a 11 e n Kultur-
volkern ab und bedroht sie auf das schwerste. Da
nun die genannten Eigenschaften gerade bei der nor-
dischen Rasse stårker ausgeprågt sind als bei manchen
andern Rassebestandteilen des deutschen Volkes, so
bringt die Fruchtbarkeitsauslese auch ein langsames,
weiteres Zurucktreten der nordischen Rasse im deut-
schen Volke mit sich.
Staatliche Massnahmen zum Schutz der nordischen
Rasse als soleher sind wohl uberhaupt nicht moglich.
Das deutsche Volk ist ein Mischvolk. Es ist zwar
moglich in einem solehen Volke durch gesetzgeberische
Massnahmen dahin zu wirken, dass die korperlich
und geistig tuchtigen und hochwertigen Menchen sich
wenigstens nicht schwåcher fortpflanzen als die kor-
perlich und geistig minderwertigen, aber man kann
nicht gerade die Deutschen nordischer Rasse auf
Kosten der ubrigen Deutschen irgendwie bevorzugen.
Jeder Versuch dieser Art wurde nur bedeuten, dass zu
den vielen Gegensåtzen innerhalb unseres Volkes —
sozialer, religioser, politischer Art — nun auch noch
Rassegegensåtze kåmen. Die Deutschen in ihrer
G e s a m t h e i t, ob sie der nordischen, alpinen, medi-
terranen Rasse oder irgend einem Mischtyp angehoren,
