Yfirlit
I þessum kafla eru birtar töflur um starfandi fólk (16-74 ára).
Töfluframsetningin er í níu undirköflum, þar sem starfandi
fólk er skoðað með tilliti til menntunar, hjúskaparstéttar,
atvinnustéttar, atvinnugreina, vinnutíma, aukastarfa og fleira.
Hér á eftir verður stiklað á nokkrum athyglisverðustu
upplýsingur.um sem fram koma í kaflanum. Þá er gerð grein
fyrir helstu hugtökum og aðferðum sem varða töflur í þessum
kafla.
Starfandi fólki fj ölgaði um 5.100 manns 1991-1996 eða úr
136.900 í 142.000. Milli áranna 1995 og 1996 mældist nær
engin aukning á fjölda starfandi. Fjölgun þeirra sem eru í
starfi er nánast eingöngu í aldurshópunum 35-54 ára hjá
báðum kynjum. Á árunum 1991-96 fækkaði starfandi fólki
utan höfuðborgarsvæðisins um 1.600 manns en fjölgaði á
höfuðborgarsvæðinu um 6.700. Breytingar þessar á fjölda
starfandi héldust nokkum veginn í hendur við mannfjölda-
og búsetuþróun þannig að hlutfall starfandi af mannij öldanum
1996 var 78,6% miðað við 79% árið 1991. Þetta em talsvert
hærri hlutföll en á ámnum 1993-94 þegar hlutfall starfandi
var innan við 77%.
Synopsis
This chapter presents tables about the employed (aged 16-
74). The tables are presented in nine sections which examine
the employed from various angles, such as education, marital
status, employment status, economic activity, working hours,
second job, etc. The following are some of the highlights of
that chapter. The principal concepts and methods relating to
the tables in this chapter are also outlined.
The number of employed increased by 5,100 over the
period 1991-1996, from 136,900 to 142,000. Virtually no
increase in the number of people at work was measured
between 1995 and 1996. The increase in the number of
employed is almost entirely confmed to the age of35-54, for
both sexes. Over the period 1991-96 there was a decrease of
1,600 in the number of employed outside the capital area, but
an increase in the capital area of 6,700. These changes in the
number of employed broadly corresponded to population
and residence trends, whereby the employed accounted for
78.6% of the population in 1996 compared with 79% in
1991. This is a considerably larger proportion than over the
period 1993-1994, when it was less than 77%.

Fjölgun starfandi á árunum 1991-96 kom einvörðungu
fram í þjónustugreinum en í þeim fjölgaði starfandi fólki úr
87.400 í 94.000 manns eða um 7,6%. í landbúnaði, sjávar-
útvegi og iðnaðargreinum fækkaði hins vegar á tímabilinu
um 1.400 manns. Sú breyting, sem og breytingar milli áranna
1995 og 1996, er þó innan skekkjumarka.
The increase in the number of employed over the period
1991-1996 was entirely confmed to service industries, where
there was an increase of 7.6%, from 87,400 to 94,000. In
agriculture, fisheries and manufacturing industries the number
of employed fell by 1,400 over this period. However, this
change, like the year-on-year change between 1995 and
1996, is within the confidence limits.
