The maternity death rate 1972 was 0.0 per ÍOOO children born.
11. Artificial Abortion (cf. table XII).
During the year 136 artificial abortions took place under the Birth
Control Act, which came into operation in 1935. In 42 out of these
136 cases social as well as medical indications had been taken into
consideration.
12. Accidents. The rate of deaths by accidents (including suicide)
is 0.60 per 1000 of the whole population.

13. Health Personnel (cf. table I). The total number of licensed
medical men in Iceland was 435 at the end of the year 1972, whereof
333 were resident in Iceland. There are 57 medical districts.
The number of midwives at work was 149 while the number of districts
is about 200. Trained nurses at work were 617. 117 dental surgeons
are working in the country.
14. General Insurance. The National Insurance Act of 1936
(amended many times) covers besides diseases: accidents, disablement
and old age insurance.
15. Food and Nutrition. The chemical analysis and bacteriological
investigations are done at the State Laboratories in Reykjavík.
