Summary.
The paper describes investigations in the years 1956 and 1957 on ensiling without additives
in 9 tower silos and 6 low silos (table 1). The ensiled material was fresh grass of first cutting
at the flowering stage in the tower silos and 2 low silos with aftermath on the top of the
silos. In 4 low silos the ensiled grass was aftermath. In 8 tower silos and 3 low silos the grass
was chopped. The chemical composition of the grass is given in table 4.
The main results were as follows:
1. There was a considerable increase in temperature during fermentation in all silos, and in
none of them cold fermentation was realized (table 4 and figs. 1—7). Chopping did not
significantly affect rise in temperature.
2. Loss of organic matter was of the order of 20% in tower silos and 16% in low silos. The
top layer loss is not included in those figures (table 5). Chopping had no effect on loss
of organic matter.
3. Chopping significantly improved the quality of the silage. The effect of chopping was sim-
ilar in both types of silos.
4. In spite of the positive effect of chopping the silage from chopped grass was not of satisfactory
quality. The content of lactic acid was too low, and the butyric acid content was on the
average above 0.2% in all the silos. The pH was on the average above 4.2 in all silos but
one (table 4).
5. Only 27.2% of all analysed samples of silage from, chopped grass had a butyric acid content
below 0.21%, and only 2.8% of samples from unchopped grass was below this limit (fig. 8).
6. There was little difference in silage quality between tower silos and low silos (table 5).
7. The results strongly indicate that ensiling without additives is not to be recommended, if
high quality silage is aimed at. The need for practical experiments on the use of various
additives for silage making is stressed.
