are not insuperable obstacles to that explanation. There is
only one instance of 434’s agreeing with Flat against 1001,
1324 hlaupa] hlaupast, and this is of no great significance.
A few more examples of the variants found in 434 are
quoted here (Flat’s reading followed by 434’s with 222’s
in brackets where it differs from Flat’s): l16 Haka] Hako-
nar, 224 Halldor] Haraldur, 827 skips giœta] inverted, 1421
kemvr] kom, 1514 avllv spioti] ollu skoti leingra (ollu
leingra ollu skote 222), 1720 renur] smigur undir hnotina og
(flygur under knotina og 222), 1827 afklœdaztt þeir] kasta
þeir klœdum (kasta þeir yferklœdumm 222), 2121 hryggur]
allhryggur, 2717 otta] + sleginn.
There are three instances where JS 629, Lbs 1001 and
JS 434 agree against JS 222. Two of these are completely
insignificant but one is perhaps a little surprising. Flat’s
kiosa (434) is replaced by velia in 222 and telia in the
other three MSS. Presumably the reading in *a was telia
and this was changed in 222.
e) Group W is made up of only one MS, ÍBR 43 8vo.
This is the MS which contains the greatest number of
variants from Flat. No opportunity of rephrasing or
substituting one word for another has been lost. In
addition, there are some passages in which the scribe,
Þórður Jónsson, seems to have had difficulty in making
out his exemplar and there are several instances of
inaccuracy. A selection of the variants is quoted here:
