headings). The question raised by this considerable differ-
ence in length is whether the Hr text represents an abridged
version of the original HÞ or whether the Flat text has
been expanded. It seems on the whole most likely that
the Hr text has been abridged, for the passages that are
peculiar to Flat do not read like the chance additions
of a mere scribe. Occasionally, it is true, the addition
takes the form of an illustrative proverb or proverbial
expression, e.g. 519-20 þath verdur mier þvngtt ath sigla
milli skers ok barv; 521~22 ma ek þo ei þurtt af halmi
bera; 1214~15 eiki þurfi holan baug vmm þath ath klappa;
2(p-28 Enn þann ma ei kefia er gud vill hefia; but that the
proverbs were possibly found in the original HÞ is
suggested by the survival of one proverb in Hr as well
as Flat, 2011 onduerder skulu erner kloast (2027). The
remaining passages that are peculiar to Flat give the
impression of belonging to the original version of the
þáttr. Many of the lengthiest are connected with Áslák’s
unwillingness to entertain the king. A list of the more
significant passages is given below. Sometimes these have
been completely omitted from Hr; sometimes the content
is expressed in a briefer form.
