seminations have brought very favourable results and have
rather improved, and in this respect the societies are on a
fairly equal level. Similarity of fertility of the serving bulls
was experienced. On individual farms the results varied
from year to year and these variations may be attributed
mainly to differences in the conditions of the cows (Table
IX). '
C. Progeny Testing. In this chapter the Bull Progeny
Tests performed on the bulls Þeli and Fylkir are explained.
Both bulls rendered satisfactory services as the reports XII
and XIII show. The heifers were reared at the station and
Table X indicates their growth and development at differ-
ent ages right up to the first lactation period; compare al-
so Fig. 3. Examinations af dams revealed that dams of Þeli’s
daughters were considerably inferior to dams of Fylkir’s
daughters. This equalizes to some extent the differences
between the bulls shown on Table XII. From comparisons
made between the daughters of the bulls, apart from the
progeny testing, very insignificant differences were re-
vealed; see Table XVI. It seems, therefore, that the bulls
have rendered excellent services and they have received
recognition as first prize winners.
Both of them seem to have good milk and milk fats pro-
duction characteristics. Fylkir must, however, be considered
somewhat superior. The daughters of both bulls show su-
periority to heifers of the same age in the S. N. E. area;
compare Table XVII. Many of the daughters of Þeli seem
better developed and stronger cows than Fylkir’s daughters,
which seem rather small and of a finer physical structure.
D. Assertions and Facts. This part of the report deals
with points about which disputes often arise and unfounded
arguments are expressed. It will be attempted here to pre
sent arguments in favour of the points in question and their
basis is sought in the S. N. E. reports and other sources.
