Carex caryophyllea Latourr
recorded in Iceland
by Hörður Kristinsson,
Institute of Biology, University of Iceland,
Grensásvegur 12, Reykjavík
Botanical investigations in the summer
1978 in Herdisarvik, at the southern slope of
Reykjanes Peninsula, SW-Iceland, led to the
discovery of Carex caryoþhyllca Latourr. This
species has not been recorded from Iceland
before.
The plants were found on the lowest part
of south facing, grassy slope below the cliffs
of Herdísarvíkurfjall, in an area of ca.
10X25 m. The vegatation of this slope was,
besides Carex caryoþhyllea, characterized by
several species of the southern element in the
Icelandic flora (Succisa þratensis, Fragaria
vesca, Filiþendula ulmaria, Prunella vulgaris and
Valeriana officinalis ssp. sambucifolia).
Description is given of the Icelandic
specimens of Carex caryoþhyllea.
