þessa kalla fram ileiri spurningar en þær svara. Fjaran er ilókið vistkerfi og margt er enn á huldu um lifnaðar- liætti þeirra dýra sem þar lifa. S U M M A R Y Distribution and habitat of marine littoral invertebrates in Breida- ijördur, W-Iceland by Erlingur Hauksson Institute of Marine Biology, University of Bergen, Espegrend, N-5065 Blömsterdalen, Norway. Distribution of marine littoral inverte- brates in the large bay Breidafjördur, W- Iceland (Fig. 1), was studied in summer 1973. 71ie most common shore-type in Breidafjördur are sheltered mud flats, with heavy growth of Ascopyllum ?iodos- um (L.) Le Jol. on stones and low cliffs. The most abundant species were: the gastropods, Littorina saxatilis (Olivi), Littorina obtusata (L.) (sensu lato), Thais lapillus (L.), Onoba aculeus (Gould) and Skeneopsis planorbis (Fabricius); the bi- valves Cyamium minutum (Fabricius) ancl Mytilus edulis (L.); the cirriped Bal- anus balanoides (L.); the amphipod Marinogammarus obtusatus (Dahl); and the polychaetes, Arenicola marina (L.), Fabricia sabella (Ehrenberg) and Pygo- spio elegans (Claparéde). Most of them are generally abundant in the littoral zone around Iceland. The lollowing species reached the northern limit of their known Icelandic range in Breidafjördur: the cirriped Bal- anus crenatus (Bruguiére); the amphipod Marinogammarus marinus (Leach); and the polychaetes Scolelepis girardi (Qua- trefages), Nerine cirratulus (delle Chiaje) ancl Polydora ciliata (Johnston). 98
