Ársrit Bandalags lúterskra kvenna 17 Helen Swinburne Once in a long while one makes the acquaintance of someone who makes a deep and lasting impres- sion. Such meetings are rare and always worthwhile. When my friend and I ap- proached the neat small home of her relatives in Calgary that hot Sunday afternoon I was prepared to spend a few minutes making a few pleasant contributions to the conversation such as is required when one makes a call. But from the moment the door was opened by a lady with the brightest eyes imaginable, I was completely fascinated. Here was a person of rare charm and a voice which was a delight to listen to. She introduced me to her mother who put me in mind of a Dresden figurine and now I was simply captivated The atmosphere of happiness and friendliness filled the small room where we visited. Some time after our arrival we were joined by a gentleman of soft voice and gentle manner. Our call came to an end all too soon, but we had made arrangements to lunch the following day with Helen M. Lloyd. This prospect filled me with pleasure as I wished to become better acquainted with this charm- ing lady who paints, writes poetry and prose and whose life story reads like a fairy tale. She graciously consented to telling me her life story which I take great pleasure in relaying in her own words. I feel sure that when the readers have read this autobiography and the accompanying poems they too will feel the unique per- sonality of the writer and will understand why the sunny Sunday afternoon will always remain a memorable one. I. S. B.
