While the children were gathering driftwood for a fire we had
decided to make on the beach in front of Lundi, my husband and
I strolled across the road to visit the Canadian Sunday School
Mission Camp. We met a friendly reception and as we could not
prolong our visit that time we were invited to return two days
later. That invitation was accepted and with great interest I
watched for such things as might be of benefit to us in our search
for a project to work at.
A few days after that I happened to meet a co-worker from the
League while shopping at Gimli. In her off-hand friendly manner
she told me she had discovered that my husband and I spent a lot
of time swimming. She had made more than one attempt to get
hold of me and each time I had been out swimming. Her mind was
full of the Canadian Sunday School Mission Camp. She had been
there and, as she was acquainted with the secretary, Miss Taylor,
she would secure an invitation for the two of us to go there if I was
interested. As it happened I had been there a few days before. We
talked for a while and decided that here was something we could
bring up at the next meeting of the executive. This was the Vice-
President of the League, Mrs. H. G. Henrickson of Winnipeg, who
is now the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Sunrise Lutheran
Camp.
In August that summer an executive meeting was held at
Gimli in the summer cottage of Mrs. Henrickson. We told the meet-
ing about our visits to the C.S.S.M.C. and brought forth the idea
that perhaps at some future date we could rent a place like that for
a few days.
The idea was kept alive but nothing was done the following
summer as it became evident to us that our people were not inter-
ested. That fall (1937) at a meeting held September 17, a decision
was reached to make an attempt to start the work the following
summer if a camp was available. Mrs. Henrickson was delegated
to speak to the owners of the C.S.S.M. Camp and at a meeting of
the executive held in April 1938, she informed us that the camp was
available for ten days in August if we saw our way clcar to organize
for the work. At that meeting it was decided to consult the minis-
ters of the Synod, and to bring this up at the Synodical Convention
that spring and at the Convention of the Young People’s organiza-
tions from the different parishes to be held in Arborg also that
