Continent. But I ask—is that not sufficient reason for us to see
the need, does that not call for our love and energy, for that phase
of the church work; teaching the other half of what should be
Christ’s Kingdom to live to the glory of God? We have great
responsibilities along this line. We have been given the opportunity
to render unto God what is His. We have been taught to fear, love
and trust Him. We have no excuse for not obeying His Command-
ments, even if we have not been taught to iove God, for I grant you
there are many who do not know the value of Christianity. But
we have been taught to read. We can instruct ourselves by reading
God’s word. In fact never a day goes by that we do not see a part
of the scriptures in newspapers and magazines. “He who hath ears
let him hear.”
So we have opportunities which have been denied our colored
brothers. Why should we not put forth every effort to send mis-
sionaries to teach them! God so loved the world that He gave His
only hegotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting life!
Let us then turn our energy and love to our brothers and sisters
in Africa, India and the many other fields where our Lutheran
missions are at work. I quote the Rev. Dr. Fry, president of the
United Lutheran Church of America, in the November issue of the
Lutheran Women’s World: “Is it any wonder that so many non-
Christian nations are floundering today and others have become
downright devilish? No honest Christian can have an easy con-
science as long as more than half of mankind is adrift without God.
Let me say it abruptly, we can’t be safe!
It is a bottomless mystery why America and Europe should be
the favored lands, why we should have the gospel while the others
don’t. Nothing in our personalities makes us better fitted for faith.
Our type is practical rather than spiritual. We are materialistic,
not especially religious. The one saving virtue that God saw in us
may be our energy. If so, let’s not fail Him. For His sake and
equally for our own His Kingdom must be strengthened powerfully
and fast!”
The following is a hymn taken from the same issue:
What shall I render to the Lord
To Jesus, the incarnate word
