Mrs. Oliver has been a very active worker in the Selkirk
Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid through the years. We know
there is something seriously amiss with her health if her seat in
church is not occupied on a Sunday at an evening service. I will
not attempt to describe her activities as a member of the Senior
Ladies Aid. Through the years she has done that work ungrudg-
ingly, with joy as have so many other members of that organization.
Some one has said that celebrations, in one form or another,
are like the tinsel on a Christmas tree. That is very true. The real
thing is what prompted such celebrations: the deep and true friend-
ship of many years standing, an appreciation for many acts of kind-
ness which showed such deep unobtrusive understanding, the so-
called minor incidents of life that seem forgotten in the hurry of
every-day life but that come to mind on days like these. For all
this we have come here to extend a warm hand of friendship to
you both. We are mindful that today has double significance in the
life of the bride: fifty years ago she chose her twentieth birthday
as her wedding day.
In closing I would like to refer to one branch of work in which
Mrs. Oliver has taken part during the last summers. She has served
as a member of the kitchen staff at Sunrise Lutheran Camp since
its opening in 1946. There are sides to her work there which no
remuneration can pay. When I look back over these years and
think of the many hundreds of campers who have dwelt there, I
remember the courtesy, kindness and gentleness Mrs. Oliver has
shown everyone of these whenever she had an occasion to come
in contact with them. This is something that has helped to create
the home-atmosphere we wish to exist there. As a token of ap-
preciation a few of us who have been there with you ask you to
accept this small gift. May I also convey our very best wishes on
this, your day. And Mr. Oliver we, the camp group, also feel in-
debted to you. No woman is able to do good work in her own home
nor outside of it without the co-operation of her husband. For such
co-operation in your wife’s work at camp we ask you also to accept
a small personal gift. Keep it as a token of our deep appreciation
and good wishes.
May God bless our bride and groom on this their Golden
Wedding Day. May He give them many years filled with peace and
contentment.
