88 ÁRDÍS Manitoba Temperance Alliance Report By MRS. MARGRET I. BARDAL Ladies: As your representative to the Temperance Alliance, I have here a report on our work during the year. Our annual convention was not held this year, instead a speaker was secured, namely Dr. Andrew C. Ivy, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., of Chicago, 111. He held the lecture in the Grace Church and a large audience was present. An active question and answer period fol- lowed the lecture. A luncheon was held at The Hudson’s Bay Co., to which invitations were sent to our Government department heads. This luncheon seems to have created quite a lot of interest in the city. The Summary of Educational Activities from April 1, 1953 to March 31, 1954 Community and school work shows much advance — range of activities has been widened. The general public is making a new appraisal of our work. We are being noticed for what we are doing. We are an organization committed to a program of actual knowledge about beverage alcohol and alcohol problems, an organization dealing in facts and knowledge which appeal to common sense and foster social responsibility. During the year, 293 lectures have been given in Manitoba, both in urban and rural districts, reaching approximately 22,000 men, women and children. About one and one-half hours have been spent with each student body and used for films, lecture, and discussion. Starting on May 30, an eight-week series will be broadcast over CKY called the “Lonesome Road”, dealing with the rehabilitation of alcoholics. The Bracken Commission The Government feels that any adequate study of a matter as involved and complex as the liquor problem will require a most searching and exhaustive study of many sources of mformation, such as reports of other investigations; the very voluminous litera- ture on the subject, and a careful analysis of the operation of the liquor laws of other Provinces and the United States. “The Government therefore proposes to make available to the commission whatever technical help by experts is required.
