LAUFEY OLSON “They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:32) One of the most thrilling stories connected with the Resur- rection of our Lord is the familiar story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The first Easter day was drawing to a close; the sun was sinking in the west; the shades of night were falling; soon it would be pitch dark. The greatest Event in the history of the world had transpired and these two men were completely unaware of it. They had left Jerusalem. Their hearts were heavy; their feet were like lead; they walked along very slowly, mournfully recounting the awful events that had just taken place. Their Master had been crucified; their hopes were blasted; their faith was shat- tered; now there was nothing for them to do but to return to their village and their previous occupations. Their heads were drooping and their countenances were very gloomy. All at once, a Stranger overtook them. He was quite a contrast. His eyes were beaming. His face was shining and His personality was radiant. Some great experience evidently had come into His life. He spoke to them something like this: “Men, what is wrong? You look so sad and gloomy; your voices sound very mournful.” They were annoyed. Grief seldom welcomes exuberance. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of
