to the North at “the gates of the world.” She rendered a great
service to the cause of Christianity in Iceland by translating the
devotional book, Daily Lighi, into Icelandic.
During her stay in Iceland Ólafía renewed old friendships and
also met new friends who had known about her and her work.
Once again Ólafía heard the call to return to Norway, and,
despite poor health, she left Iceland for the last time. Less than
half a year after leaving Iceland Ólafía died on June 26, 1924 in
Oslo. She died with a strong faith in the Lord, as a tired warrior
who had fought a good fight.
Tearfully her Norwegian friends bade farewell as her body
was returned to Iceland. After the funeral in Reykjavík which
was attended by many people, Ólafía was laid to rest beside her
aunt Þorbjörg Sveinsdóttir. But she is not here. She abides in one
of those mansions of which Jesus spoke about with such certainty
when He said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions . . She
lives also in the hearts of all who would deny self and serve God,
inspiring them on to greater service.
