The Bridge Of Memories

It has been the custom for a
number of years, to have as one of
the items of interest at the Con-
ventions of the Lutheran Women’s
League, a Handicraft Display.
Usually it is left to the hostesses of
the convention to secure and set
up this display. The bulk of the
items displayed have, therefore,
been the work of the local women,
but others have been invited to
bring articles of handwork with
them and add them to the exhibits.
This Handicraft Display has al-
ways been very popular and cer-
tainly a credit to the Lutheran
Women’s League. A great variety
of work has been shown and all of
it has been of high standard.
At the 1964 Convention at Arborg, the Display was no excep-
tion. Many beautiful pieces of handwork were graciously loaned
and displayed to an advantage. Possibly, the item which created
the most interest was a patchwork quilt made of pieces of beautiful
material, silk satin, brocade, velvet and metallic. The pattern
consisted of a square in the centre of each block, surrounded by
triangles and rectangles all expertly sewn together. These pieces
had been saved and treasured for years and each had a particular
memory attached to it. Some of the patches must have brought a
smile or a chuckle to the lips of the seamstress as she recalled
some long past incident while she stitched. Probably a faint rustle
of pique belonged to some. No doubt, here and there, a tear fell
but was quickly brushed aside, when the memory was sad or
poignant. Maybe a sigh accompanied others. All in all, the time
spent in sewing on this quilt became a sort of rendezvous with
