“My presence will go with you.” Exodus 33:14.
“Lo, I am with you always.” Matthew 28:20.
The Lord had given His servant, Moses, a great task to per-
íorm. The difficult task was to lead God’s people out of Egypt,
through the wilderness, and finally into the Promised Land. Be-
cause of his sinful impatience, it was not the privilege of Moses
to complete this task. That was left to another — Joshua, the son
of Nun. But, nevertheless, Moses did a glorious work. He and his
people were on the border of the Holy Land when he passed away,
and the Lord gave him the delight of seeing from a distance the
promised land which flowed with milk and honey.
After the law had been given on Mt. Sinai, and shamefully
broken the worship of the golden calf, and after a severe reprimand
to the people had been delivered, the Lord issued new marching
orders and the journey was resumed. In the beginning of this new
venture, the Lord spoke the words of our Old Testament text to
liis great servant and Israel’s mighty leader, Moses: “My presence
shall go with you.” (Exodus 33:14). How comforting and strength-
ening these words must have been, coming from the lips of our great
God and Heavenly Father. How they remind us of the reassuring
words of our Blessed Saviour spoken after. He had given His
disciples their marching orders in the great commission, followed
by: “Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” (Matt.
28:20).
God is omnipresent. That is one of His unique characteristics.
“Wither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or wither shall I flee from thy
presence? If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I make my bed
in Sheol, thou art there! If I take the wings of the morning and
dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there thy hand shall
lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me,” cried the Psalmist of
old. (Psalm 139:7—10). Another sacred author tells us: “The eyes
