Margret Stone
1878—196G
Margret Stone was born on Fe-
bruary 6, 1878, in Hraunhreppi,
Mýrasýsla, Iceland, the daughter
of Jón Thorsteinsson and his wife
Solveig Brynjólfsdóttir. In 1882 the
family moved to Hraundal where
they made their home until 1886
when they emigrated to Canada.
Maggie, as she was affectionately
known, was one of a large family.
She had three brothers, Thorleifur,
who remained in Iceland, Thor Lif-
man, and Thorsteinn, as well as
three sisters, Snjólaug, Inga and
Marin. Upon their arrival in Ca-
nada they settled at Hnausa, Man.,
and lived in the district for some
years and then moved to Winnipeg,
which became their permanent
home.
When Maggie was seventeen years old her father died. From
then on, she became the sole support of the mother and of her
young brother, Thorsteinn and sister, Marin, both of whom were
under eight years of age.
In 1913 her sister Marin, the wife of Valdimar Einarson, passed
away leaving three small children, two boys and a baby girl of
eighteen months. Margret unofficially adopted this wee girl who
bore the same name as her aunt, and brought her up.
Margret’s care and solicitude for her mother was exemplary.
No daughter could have been kinder or more loving. For many
years they and their small charges made their home with Thor-
steinn Stone and his wife Margaret. Here, in 1942, the mother
