certainly not quotations, but glosses to sentences and phrases found
in various places among the laws, as e. g. s.vv. Arinhaulcur, Beyst.
This being the case, it seems impossible to determine what manu-
scripts were used, and in some cases even which particular book is
referred to.
Probably only those quotations which are in DG 55 were in Magn-
ús’ original glossary. The rest seem to have been added in Copen-
hagen, probably by Guðmundur Andrésson (see above pp. 38—43).
Among those which were in the original glossary are three referenc.es
to Grágás:
5 Aliostsrade: Þad er Aliostsrade ef madur gilldrar til þess ad vapn falli a ann-
an. — This corresponds to Grágás Ia 184:13—14 and II 370:10—12, but it is
closest to the Konungsbók version, which reads: “Þat ero alióts ráð ef maðr
gilldrar til þess at vapn scyli falla a man.”
15 Beyst: Þad er beyst er madur er Raudur fyrer hoggie. — This is evidently
a gloss to the passage in Grágás II 370:20—21: “En ef sá verðr beystr eða
bitinn, svá at blátt eSa rautt verSr eptir eða hlpðir ...” This passage is not in
the Konungsbók, which has merely ej ásýnt verðr (I a 156:4), so in this case
it seems to have been the Staðarhólsbók text which was used.
95 Oæll: Þad metst fyrer meyre saar ef madur sker tungu ur manne, edur
stijngur ut auga mans, brijtur tennur, sker aff manne nef edur Eyra, suo
giellding og kliimhogg um þiö þuer, er madur oæll til Doms fyre oll hin
meyre Saar. — This corresponds to Grágás Ia 147—148 and II 299, but is
considerably different from hoth texts, and was therefore probably written
from memory. The last phrase (“er madur ... Saar”) corresponds to Staðar-
hólsbók: “Sá maðr er ó 011 til doms er hann vegr man eða veitir hin meire
sár,” which occurs a few lines before the remainder of the quotation. In the
Konungsbók, this sentence appears in another chapter (p. 145), so here again
perhaps it was the StaÖarhólsbók-text which was the source.
One quotation is referred to “Vet. Leg.” This seems to mean Gttla-
þingslög:
54 Hóldur ... er sa sem hefur ad erfdum tekid odul epter Faudur og Mödur:
defin Vet. Leg. — This corresponds to NGL II 146 (Gulaþingslög), which
has: “En sa er haulldr er hann hefir oðaul at erfðum tekit bæðe eptir faður
oc moðor.”
