SUMMARY
The criteria of estimating the incidence rate of open-angle
glaucoma in Iceland was the date of diagnosis and initial
treatment during 10 years period, 1970-79 as presented in
Table V.
Earlier glaucoma studies have revealed that about third
of glaucoma patients in Iceland are treated at the
Outpatient glaucoma clinic in Iceland. About 27% of the
males and 15% of the females had visual field defects
(GVFD) when the disease was diagnosed. The overall
incidence in the age group 40 years and older was about 2
per thousand population, 50 years and older 2.9 per
thousand, 60 years and older 3.9 per thousand and 70
years and older 4.7 per thousand.
The estimated incidence of new open-angle glaucoma
in Iceland is shown in Fig. 1 both sexes together. The
incidence is 0.1 per thousand in the 40-49 age group with
linear increase to 5.1 per thousand in the 70-79 year age
group. Rates for males are higher than rates for females
in all age groups.
