The IPA is based in Reykjavík
city centre on the harbour side of
Tryggvagata 17, and there you’ll
find both a studio and a gal-
lery on the premises. The IPA’s
extensive activities are run by
member volunteers who make up
the governing board as well as
the exhibition and studio com-
mittees. The IPA participates an-
nually at the Reykjavik Cultural
Night, Museum Night and other
such festivals.
The IPA Gallery
The IPA Gallery is host to a
continual stream of ambitious
exhibitions by IPA members and
other artists, both local and from
abroad. On average, there are
around 20 shows a year, featur-
ing a wide range of media such as
prints on paper, book art, sculp-
ture and photography. The IPA
gallery is very popular due to its
central location, and the spa-
cious 130 square meters and high
ceiling offer attractive possibili-
ties for setting up various types
of installations. Applications for
renting the gallery are thus open
to all types of artists.
The Studio
Shortly after the association was
founded, a community workshop
was established with the goal of
enabling printmakers to work on
their art. Fine art printmaking
demands specialized facilities,
equipment and chemical treat-
ments which are rarely in the
reach of an individual artist to
create for themselves. The IPA
studio is a world-class facility for
professional printmaking art-
ists, containing all the necessary
components such as presses and
other large equipment, as well as
decent facilities for working in a
variety of photo-based printing
The Icelandic Printmakers Association (IPA) was founded
in 1969 and now has over seventy members. The majority
of members are specif ically educated in f ine art printmak-
ing and are currently creating their work using various
printmaking techniques.
