I use old slides and approach the
surface as small drawings in space,
rendering the slides physically
by making cut-outs. I projected
them with a slide projector onto
wooden structures and Plexiglas
screens. The process on the slide
created a conflicted space, empty
but also filled with light, driving
tension between the images. I am
also working with drawing and
painting with graphite and acrylic,
using found slides and everyday
images as inspiration.
Is this the first time you did a
residency?
Yes. It was.
First impression of Iceland/Reykja-
vík?
I think what struck me first was
the landscape. The scenery that I
saw from the airplane while land-
ing was otherworldly. There were
just two colours, blue from the sea,
and greyish brown from the land.
But inside Reykjavik was a whole
different story. It is very vibrant.
Where did you first hear about the
SÍM Residency?
It was from the Internet. I was
searching for a residency in Ice-
land. I was very interested in the
landscape since I found someone’s
travel photos from a bunch of
slides that I got from e-bay.
Then I saw a classmate mentioning
the deadline on Facebook, and so I
applied. It was my last year in N.Y.,
so I thought it would be a nice
transition from there to Korea.
What are you working on at the
SIM residency?
I have made a series of draw-
ing and paintings from images I
encountered during my stay. One
series was from a walking path
I took around the Farmhouse in
Korpúlfsstaðir and the seaside.
The other series of work was 8
drawings inspired by photos from
a travel magazine introducing Ice-
landic pools all over the country. I
was mesmerized by the small pub-
lic pools in the city and thought it
was one of the large influences I
had while I was there.
Do you feel that the residency and/
or Iceland has affected your work?
Yes. Perhaps not right away, but I
feel like it made a change on how I
collect images and how I make an
approach on them. Unfortunately
I was only staying for one month,
but the limited aspect of the resi-
dency gave me a bit of freedom.
Sources became simpler and it was
a pleasant experience. Also it was
a great time for me to photograph
the landscape and just inhale the
scenery. I think it will definitely
peep out in my new works.
During your stay in Iceland, did
you see any exhibitions that
affected you?
I was very touched by the art show
at Listería in Seltjarnarnes near
the lighthouse. It felt like a large
conversation between the art piec-
es and the space itself, and also the
landscape around the unfinished
building. It was lucky to catch that
show on the last day.
During your stay, have you made
any new connections which you
might benefit from?
Watching other artists during their
working hours and getting to know
the artist and the work in differ-
ent aspects in a very short time
was very interesting. I think I have
learned a lot during conversations
with other artists as well and hope
it benefits through the future as
well.
Was there anything about the Ice-
landic art scene that surprised you?
One thing I felt was different from
the art scene in Korea and even
New York was the density. As a
small but active city, Reykjavík is
everything was happening every-
where at the same time and every-
one new everyone.
