The manuscripts used in the present edition are:
A (= AM. 335, 4°) “C. 1400.” A vellum manuscript
of thirty-five leaves, 22 X 14.5 cm. This manuscript,
the end of which is lost, contains the following col-
lection of romantic sagas and tales, the items headed
in a nineteenth century hand: Sturlaugs saga starfsama
lv—11r line 9, Um Samson (Árni Magnússon’s list
of contents attached to fo. lr adds to this title the
words ex Bibliis) 1T line 10—14v line 25, Um kongs
son, hertoga son jarls son 15r—16v line 1, Um III
pjófa í Danmörk 16v line 2—18v line 9, the page
completed by the addition of four untitled tales
(= LVII—LX in H. Gering Islendzk æventyri, is-
lándische legenden novellen und márchen I, Halle a.S.,
1882), Gibbons Saga 19r—31r line 13, Drauma Jóns
Saga 31v—34v line 21, and an untitled tale {— Af
rómverska dáranum, the title added in a nineteenth
century hand to Árni Magnússon’s list) 34r line 22—
35v line 34. The final line of this page begins a new
narrative.
The thirty-five leaves are collected in five gatherings
of eight, six, ten, six and five. The sixth leaf of the
final gathering has been cut away, only enough re-
maining to preserve the stitching. Between fos. 30
(ed. 9227) and 31 (ed. 9718), that is between the last
two gatherings, is a gap of some 1,300 words in the
text of Gibbons saga. The scribe writing at this point
averaged 600—650 words to the page, so that one
full leaf has been lost here. This was probably the
first leaf of the final gathering, which thus originally
had seven or eight leaves.
The vellum of the part of the manuscript containing
Gibbons saga is in quite good condition. Fo. 24 is
creased and somewhat torn, and a small tear in the
top margin of fo. 27 just encroaches on the text.
