The results of the study are used to estimate the number of
inhabitants which can reasonabiy be served by a single doctor
working 4o hours a week.Depending on the demands on the doctor
in terms of the annual number of contacts per inhabitant,the
results were as follows :

Estimates are presented on the manning requirements,the number
of blood and urine and other tests ordered per week and the
number of referrals to a specialist in a district with 26oo
inhabitants.
Some general conclusions about health services in rural Iceland
are presented and discussed.
