work with and present ideas.
The Swedes are known for their
emphasis on analysing the needs of
people and their relationship with the
environment. The University studies
reflect these attitudes. An emphasis
is placed on work-ecology, eco-
design and the interaction between
people and machines, MMI (Men
Machine Interaction). Part of the
study is done in groups, wíth an
emphasis on project management
and active interaction within the
group. Each semester is divided into
two periods, separating the school
year into four periods. During each of
these, the students work on projects
which are used to connect the vari-
ous disciplines being taught.
The projects are varied, such the
marketing of an imaginary product.
Projects in automation have called
for a gadget to be designed that can
solve a certain problem, such as
fetching two batteries and placing
them in a box, or to light a diode.
Another example is a project carried
out in cooperation with Electrolux. It
consisted in designing storage for
tins or medicine in a refrigerator, or
designing a simple ice-machine.
In the final thesis, most aspects of
the program are to be highlighted.
Project management and planning
are important, due to time limits.
Cooperation with existing companies
was a requirement, and made an
interesting connection to the reality in
which we all live. The final theses are
completed in teams of two and are
intended to show how complicated
the design process really is. ■
