a Centre of
Excellence
ln October, IBRI Rheocenter was formally opened
by the Minister of Industry and Commerce as a cen-
tre of excellence in cement based materials: paste,
mortar and concrete. The centre is advancing to be
an outstanding research facility, mastering the state
of the art knowledge within the science of rheology
of cement based particle suspensions, including
cement paste, grouts, mortars, repair materials and
concrete. In particular the aim is to manage up to
date know-how in special concrete areas such as
high performance concrete ( HPC), underwater
concrete (UWC) and fibre reinforced concrete
(FRC). Special emphasis is on main stream technol-
ogy like self-compacting concrete (SCC).
IBRI Rheocenter specialises in problem solving for
the cement industry regarding issues related to sul-
fate balance, grinding aid, workability loss and in
particular compatibility problems between cement
and dispersing admixtures, which is of great con-
cern as numerous new types of admixtures are
nowadays based on steric hindrance instead of
electrostatic stabilization. The centre has held cours-
es in Rheology of cement based materials in all con-
tinents and in last Aug. it managed the 3rd interna-
tional conference on Self Compacting Concrete
with 250 participants from all continents. Two
courses in rheology and SCC were held prior to the
conference.
The centre is well equipped with several BML vis-
cometers of various sizes and staff of 12 persons
whereof two hold a doctorate in rheology one in
cement chemistry and two are working on higher
degrees in engineering. The centre has had clients
among the leading producers of admixtures and
cement in Europe and USA . ■
