skemmtunar. I ljós kom að flestar unglingabækur eru
ætlaðar „yngri“ unglingum, svo listinn ber keim af því. I

SUMMARY
Library services for young adults
The author spent six months in Iceland in 1992 as a representa-
tive of the American Library Association. She compares the library
services for young adults in Iceland to those in the United States.
The definition of the term „young adults" is discussed. The only
comprehensive American study on use of libraries by teenagers
(Services and Resources for Young Adults in Public Libraries in
U.S.) is described. Further the lack of such studies in Iceland is
mentioned and the pertinent studies about reading habits of Icelan-
dic children are specified. The author points out the extreme differ-
cnce in the amount of materials available for young adults in the
U.S. and Iceland. The main problem for Icelandic librarians is to
find appropriate material about a given subject, whereas the Amer-
ican librarian has to select from a wast amount of materials. Library
programs for teenagers in the U.S. are described and further school
and public library cooperation in services for young adults. The au-
thor describes a booklist which her students in a course on services
for young adults at the University of Iceland compiled for teenag-
ers, which is believed to be the first such list produced in Iceland.
The list is printed elsewhere in this periodical and may be repro-
duced for distribution to library clients.
