fGömul kona guöhrædd í Riverton hefir sent “Sam.” þetta vers.
Haföi hún í æsku numiö versið af föður sínum og geymt það iafnan
síðan sem helgan dóm í hjarta sínuj
Á skírdags kvöld það skeði
skikkaði kvöldmáltíð
Herrann, með góðu geði
og gaf hana sinum lýð.
Fyrir þá gáfu góða,
Guðs sonar hold og blóð,
þér gjörum þakkir bjóða
þú heilög iþrenning góð;
fyrir sálar saðning þá
sé þér, Guð himnum á,
heiður og vegsemd há.

In ages long past, a small seed there was sown
By some it was slighted, by few it was known;
This seed was the kingdom of God in the world,
At first a small blade, but soon others uncurled.
Then thunder and lightning raged over the world,
Tornadoes and hail-storms their dread missiles hurled;
Though frozen and scorched, and pelted by hail,
The flourishing root-stock through all did prevail.
And from that small seedling, there grew a great tree,
Whose branches spread far over land, over sea;
From life’s raging storms a safe shelter it gave;
It sheltered the living; it sheltered the grave.
Beneath it the nations are running their race;
The footsöre and wearv there al!l find a place;
The ailing and weak, find protection and care
And innocent children come gathering there.
And yet are not lacking the frosts and the storms,
To freeze it and tear it, and all kinds of worms
That gnaw at its roots; but however they tryr
They never can harm it, nor cause it to die.
