SUMMARY
This study reports the results of erythrocyte sedimentation rate
measurements in a population surveyed during 1967-’68.
T'he survey was conducted by the Iceland Heart Association. The
area of study was the city of Reykjavík with adjacent suburbs and
countiets. The population invited was 1/3 of each of 16 year-groups
of males in the age interval 34-61 years. The population was selected
from the National Roster according to birthdays i. e. the 17, 4.,
7., . . . of each month, the total number being 2.955. The response
was 74.6% and ESR was measured in 73.9%. 4.5 ml venous blood was
collected into a „Vacutainer B-D“, containing 0.5 ml of 3.8% sodium
citrate with 0.1 mg potassium sorbate.
The Westergren method for measuring ESR was used. The mean
ESR was found to increase from approx. 6 mm/hr in the youngest
age groups to approx. 11 mm/hr in the oldest, the median from approx.
5 to 7 mm/hr and the 90% fractile from approx. 13 to 22 mm/hr.
The distributions were found to be skew tailing more in the older
age groups. The distributions were found to be log-normal.
It is suggested that the 90% fractile can be used as a „normal“
upper limit of the ESR.
