DECEMBER 1964 Some drift ice was sighted at the deep-sea fishing banks ab. 30 miles NW of Cape Straum- nes. 22/i2 Sléttbakur M/g 1300 z: An ice edge ex- tending E—W sighted from pos. 6648/2430. 2<i/i2 Sléttbakur J[/g ]600z: The ice edge sighted from SE to NW 3 miles E of our posi- tion at 6642/2424. 31/12 An ice eclge extending WNW from a point 17 miles N of Cape Straumnes. (From M/s Egill Skallagrimsson.) 31 /12 Sléttbakur M/g 1800 z: Considerable drift ice E of our position at 6642/2400. JANUARY 1965 Singular floes and scattered drift ice were reported off the coast between Cape Ritur and Cape Horn. After Jan. 18 the ice practically clisappeared. 2/i Report from the Coastal Guard’s air plane TF-SIF. Radar observations: 6710/2340 — 6650/2335 - 6705/2315 - 6655/2130 - 6640/ 2110 - 6650/2100. Ice edge about 30 miles NW of Cape Straumnes. 13/i From the Defence Force, Keflavík: Ice limits extending from 6540/2900 — 6600/2600(?) - 6715/2300 - 6725/1800 - 6800/1500 - 6900/ 1200 — 7035/0830 (just S of Jan Mayen). 13/i Hekla M/g 1200 z: Scattered brash and blocks in the sailing route from Cape Horn to a point 16 miles 19° true off Drangaskörd. 1B/i Cape Horn Lighthouse 1500 z: A fielcl of clrift ice beginning near the shore and ex- tending as lar N as sighted. 15/i Kyndill M/g 1500: Drift ice in the sail- ing route from Kögur to Straumnes. Thence to Geirólfsgnúpur the ice is 3—4 miles offshore. 16/i Cape Horn 1500 z: Big ice strips brash and blocks in the sailing route off the Cape. 17/i Skjalclbreið M/g 1120 z: Brash ancl small blocks in the sailing route from Ritur to Kög- ur. 18/i Cape Horn 1200 z: The lighthouse keeper reports no ice visible except a loose 200—300 meters broad strip along the shore. Visibility excellent. 38/i The Coastal Guard 1530 z: Scattered blocks in the sailing route from Ritur to Kögur. An ice strip beginning 19 miles true N from Kögur extends 7 miles N-wards. Another strip begins 8 miles 20° true from Kögur extending E-wards in a semicirkle and ending 8 milcs off Cape Horn. 31/i Sléttbakur M/g 1745: An ice strip at 6630/2506 extending from NW to SE. FEBRUARY 1965 After February 10 open clrift ice ancl strips are reported close to the northwestern promon- tories, the lirnits of close pack ice still remain- ing ab. 30 miles NW of Cape Straumnes and no ice observed off the northern coasts. On February 24 the ice is approaching the whole northern coasts with a speed of 10 to 24 miles in 24 hours ancl passing Cape Langanes where the East-lcelandic current is pushing ab. 40 miles broad ice belt S-wards.
